How do I register for school if my student was in a Carterville school last year? This is super easy, no more going to a busy registration day! If your student was enrolled in grades K-7 last year, you do not need to come to the office to register. Our student management software system (STI) automatically enrolled your student for the 2009-10 school year and changed their grade level. At the end of this year (April/May 2010), your student came home with a registration packet for you to verify, complete and return. The first week of August we will mail book fee information, free/reduced lunch forms, etc. These forms and fees should come with your student to school on the first day – August 17th, 2010 (partial attendance day). They will give this to the teacher they have as a homeroom teacher that day.
How do I register for school if I am new to the area and have never been in a Carterville school? First, welcome to Carterville! You will need to come to our school before the first day of school to register your student. It is highly advisable not to wait until a day or two before the start of school to come visit us. New student registration will begin August 9, 2010. The first day of school is August 17, 2010. There are papers to complete, school records to be transferred, schedules to make, bus transportation to arrange, etc. and waiting until the last minute will add unwanted stress. Please be sure to read the FAQ titled “What do I need in the form of documentation to enroll a new student?” “What are the office hours for CIS this summer?”” What is the first day of student attendance?”
What do I do if my student was home schooled last year or ended the year as a home schooled student? If your student was home schooled all year or did not complete the year at a public / private school then you will need to come to the office. We will need to register your student, plus your student will need to take an assessment test. We administer a test to help us determine what grade level your student needs. This is a test that takes a couple of hours and is done with our guidance counselor. This all requires making appointments. Please see us in the office in early August so we can schedule this appointment.
What do I need in the form of documentation to enroll a new student? Transfer letter from last school attended, Birth Certificate, proof of residency, school physical and dental exam for 6th grade only (if new student is out of state he or she will need a physical regardless of grade level).
How and when do you pay fees for the school year? If you are enrolling a new student, you will pay your fees when you register him or her at our office. If your student is already enrolled in our school system from last year, fees need to be paid when the student returns his or her registration packet. The students will receive these packets n their 1st day of school, which is August 17, 2010.
What are the fees for the school year? Every student is required to pay a book fee for the use of textbooks at the school. The current fee is $35. You may be exempt from the fee if you qualify for free or reduced lunches. You MUST complete a book waiver form, which you will receive with your registration packet. If your student is in 7th/8th grade, he or she will be required to purchase a PE shirt. The cost of this uniform is $5. All CIS junior high students are required to change into a PE shirt and shorts for PE.
Where can I find the supply list? We have a supply list for each grade level (5, 6, 7, 8). Please visit our main website (www.cartervillelions.com/intersch/index.html) and click on the link titled SchoolPak School Supplies and choose the appropriate grade level. You can order from SchoolPak and have the supplies delivered to school for free or to your home for a small shipping charge. If you order after June 15, there is no free delivery to the school and the packs go up a bit in price. CIS receives $5 for every supply pack we sell as a way to fundraise (added to cost of kit). You can print off the list and take it shopping with you if you choose. We can also make you a copy in the office.

How do you pay for breakfast and lunch? Lunch money can be sent with your student and he or she will turn it in to his or her homeroom teacher. There will be a registration for try-outs on August 2nd from 9-10:30 a.m. in the foyer area outside the main office. If your student intends on trying out, please attend this registration and bring your documentation. All students need a physical less than 1 year old along with proof of medical insurance. We can make copies in the office. Try-outs for softball and baseball will be August 3rd and 4th at Tri-C fields (located next to Tri-C Elementary School and Football Stadium) from 9-11 a.m. Cross country try-outs will be at Tri-C at 7:30 p.m. *For additional softball information, please check out www.cissoftball.pbworks.com *Cross country will begin open running sessions for those interested every Tuesday night starting on July 20th at 7:00 p.m. at Tri-C Elementary School.
What do I need in order for my student to try out for a sport? All students must have a physical that is less than one year old. They must also have proof of medical insurance.
What is the first day of student attendance? The first attendance day for students is on Tuesday, August, 17th. School will dismiss this day at 9:30 a.m. This is a general orientation day that allows students to get acclimated to the school. Busses will run on this day. Wednesday, August 18th will be a full attendance day. When will junior high students receive their schedules? Junior high students will receive their schedules on the first day of school (Tuesday, August 17th). We will have tables set up in the gymnasium where students will receive their schedule.
When will 5/6 students know their teacher’s name? The first day of school, August 17th, students will be informed of their teacher(s) for the year in the gym.
When does the school day start? End? Our school day starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m.
Where will I pick up my student if they are a parent pick up? If you only have a student in grades 5 or 6, we recommend using the James Street Park, which is located North of CIS. The 5/6 students exit the doors near the park and it is a short walk. It also keeps you from the traffic in front of the school. If you only have a student in grades 7 or 8, we recommend using the Methodist Church lot or the lot in front of the main office. If you have a student in 5 and 7 or 6 and 8, we recommend you pick one of the two above locations and have both students meet you there. DO NOT use School Street to pull right up to the school. Our busses use this route and it presents a hazard. See PDF map
How should I drop my student off in the mornings? The busses use School Street and pull right up to the school for drop off. DO NOT follow this route. It is a safety hazard and interferes with our busses. Drive down School Street and turn right (north) and into our lot or turn left (south) and into the Methodist Church lot. See PDF map
Where do I park if I am visitor to the school? We have a lot located right outside the main office. We generally keep the first row open for visitors but you can park anywhere in that lot or you can use the Methodist Church lot. See PDF map
What do students do in the morning before they go to class? Students can eat breakfast at school if they choose. All 7/8 students sit in the south bleachers in the gym until dismissal. Students in grades 5/6 take turns playing outside if the weather permits. Grade 5 goes outside on odd days and grade 6 goes out on even days. Back to top |
